Google Translate + libtranslate + Virtaal = machine translation in 7 new languages
Submitted by dwayne on 1. March 2009 - 21:18
Google has just added 7 new languages to their machine translation service, taking the total to 41.
I've submitted a patch to libtranslate which will make it work with these languages.
Of course Virtaal, Translate.org.za's localisation editor uses libtranslate, so now with the libtranslate TM plugin you can get machine translations for Turkish, Thai, Hungarian, Estonian, Albanian, Maltese, and Galician. This work on Virtaal work is being supported by funding from Mozilla Corporation and from IDRC through the African Network for Localisation, Anloc project.

That's good stuff. Nice to
That's good stuff. Nice to see that Google is expanding the localization languages.
Virtaal looks good as a desktop tool
Just wanted to tell you that since Runa pointed me out to Virtaal, I have been using it on and off and, find it pretty much useful to get_stuff_done. Although, the period of getting used to Virtaal from a KBabel/Lokalize UI is taking time, I don't have complaints.
Re: Virtaal looks good as a desktop tool
Thanks for the feedback. We're currently working hard on terminology integration, placeable handling, etc. In a get_stuff_done approach of course!
The UI is very different from older style localisation editors. We like to think we've hit a paradigm that makes people really really productive. But we're probably not perfect and we're learning what works and doesn't. So please report bugs or give us feedback on the translate-devel mailing list or IRC. Now is the time to influence the design and make this the best editor you could dream of using.
