I just realised I didn't yet blog about the release of Virtaal 0.6.0. Virtaal is an advanced program with features to help translators increase translation quality and have fun.
Although this was initially intended as a bug fix release, there were several extra improvements, and we intended to indicate it with the version number as well. I'm really happy about how the quality improved over the last while in several areas.
Highlighted improvements
- Support for seeing alt-trans tags in XLIFF files as suggestions. Now Virtaal can review suggestions given on a Pootle server in XLIFF files off-line.
- Support for Microsoft Translator
- Support for the new Apertium service
- Support for proxy servers
- Support for OmegaT glossary files. As far as I know Virtaal is the only tool that can actually edit OmegaT glossary files — not even OmegaT can do it!
- A more useful welcome area in the main application area (screenshot below)
- Accessibility improvements. I think we work quite well in inverse themes now.
- Better compliance with system themes
- Many updated translations and new translations for Bulgarian and Icelandic
Many thanks for the new and updated translations! Virtaal 0.6.0 released in over 30 languages, and we already received a translation into Thai since the release.

Other smaller improvements:
- Reduced flickering in the editing area
- Small bug fixes relating to the undo functionality
- Use the most frequent word as autocomplete suggestion
- Better interaction with the Voikko backend of Enchant
- Better handling of errors in the Open-Tran service
- Reliability improvements to many formats, especially Qt TS
- Improved autocorrect data for Polish
- Bug fixes to localisation on Windows
- Support for short options on the command line
Users of the new Windows version will also benefit from all the improvements made to the Translate Toolkit since Virtaal 0.5.2, such as an improved XML placeable, improved support for the TS format and non-breaking spaces for French punctuation (see bug 1177).
The user manual is an excellent way to learn how Virtaal can help you. You can also see the full list of features. As always, feedback is appreciated. Further translation updates for Virtaal are more than welcome.

Hooray for Virtaal
Virtaal is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be… unnatural.
