Members of the Translate.org.za team, Dwayne Bailey and David Fraser attended the klnX workshop in Arusha, Tanzania from 1-5 November 2004. The aim of the workshop was for the klnX team to learn from various experts with Translate.org.za sharing about our experiences in running our project, to teach the Kiswahili team about the Translate Toolkit, share knowledge about building spell checkers and of course for us to learn.

Key successes were:

  • The extension of the Kiswahili spell checker and additional work to expand the word list of our South African spell checkers
  • Creation of the podebug tool to allow for focused translations
  • Extending pofilter to catch more translation errors and teaching the klnX team how to use the tool
  • Learning from the Tanzanians linguist in the area of glossary creation.
  • Creation of a debug build of OpenOffice.org using podebug. If you need to focus your translation effort then download the source for the OpenOffice.org debug version here.
