| How good are the spell checkers? |
|
Our spell checkers range from very sophisticated to quite basic. The sophisticated ones have been in development for a number of years while the basic ones have only recently been started or cover languages that are quite difficult to spell check.
For example, the Afrikaans and English spell checkers have both been in development for a number of years. This has made the quality of the word lists quite good as they have gone through a number of reviews. On top of that, both Afrikaans and English are very easy to spell check using word list-based checkers. The languages that do not have good spell checkers have only been developed in the last few years. This makes the depth of the word list both shallow and narrow, not covering the full extent of the language. On top of that, some languages, such as the Nguni languages, are difficult to check using word based lookup and actually require basic morphology to make a good checker. So in summary, Afrikaans and English spell checkers are of a high standard. The other languages are quite basic in their coverage. You, of course, can help by making the word list for your language much more extensive. |
