St James Software

St James Software specialises in the creation of industrial software for monitoring and gathering plant data.

Translate.org.za's relationship with St James started in 2002 when lead developer David Fraser started working on the Translate Toolkit in his spare time.  David contributed an amazing amount of code to allow Translate.org.za to deliver translations quickly and effectively.  The Translate Toolkit and Pootle that David developed are now used across the globe and form part of the WordForge project.

Our relationship with St James and David is actually quite an exciting model of how Free Software developers can be remunerated.  With a heavy workload from St James and a passion for language, David was torn between his passion and his income.  Translate.org.za and St James sat down and agreed that David would work for 2 days a week on Translate.org.za work while drawing a salary from St James.  Although he now cost more to his company, he was also a very happy developer.

In June 2006  with work pressures fromboth St James and Translate.org.za David decided to make a break and focus purely on his St James work.  We of course were saddened to see him go but the experiment was well worth it we feel.  David continues to contribute through our various mailing lists and in building some of Translate.org.za's software.

We would like to thank St James software for all their support over the years.  It often amazes us how small companies seem to make the biggest contributions to changing the world!
