The Telecoms Action Group (TAG) will publish its advert on Friday 19 January 2007 in the Mail & Guardian newspaper. The advert, developed in conjunction with Da Vinci Edison Bell and Peppermint media strategists, and paid for by over 100 pledgers, will reveal how Telkom manages to make billions of rands profit at the expense of the South African consumer, says campaign head Richard Frank. Read the full Tectonic article Ed: Translate.org.za has put money into TAG for the simple reason that we see 4 pillars to the perpetuation of the digital divide: price of communication, low-cost software, low-cost devices and of course language. We deal with language and believe low-cost software Linux is best solved, without monopolies, through Linux. The hardware issue is mostly solved as we have a very competitive environment. But high communication costs have not been solved. We want to support those who raise the issue of continued high prices of SA communication costs and ... thus we support TAG. Our dream is that we might actually see providers see consumers as their future not their cash cow, and that government and ICASA will start getting vision. Vision ~ like that of South Korea who see everyone connected by broadband. A vision that could rock South Africa dramatically into being a place where tech development just wants to be. |
