Inkatha Freedom Party chief whip Koos van der Merwe has won his language skirmish with BMW. Last week Van der Merwe, who is famed for getting his point across in sometimes unconventional ways in Parliament, demanded to be provided with Afrikaans service forms when he took his vehicle in for regular maintenance at a Pretoria BMW dealership. When BMW initially refused, stating that business was conducted in English, Van der Merwe took the matter to the Afriforum - attached to the Solidarity union - which threatened to boycott the luxury car manufacturer if negotiations failed. |
